The Gulf of Tonkin
This may seem a little bit too farfetched, but it’s true. One of the main reasons given for the Vietnam War was something called The Gulf of Tonkin or the USS Maddox Incident. Essentially, it is thought that three North Vietnamese Navy Torpedo boats were spotted during an intelligence patrol in the US waters. Destroyer boat, USS Maddox, supposedly caught sight of these boats and then fired nearly 300 shells to sink them. The US President at the time, Lyndon B. Johnson, quickly drafted up The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution which became one of the main (and legal) reasons to send military forces to Vietnam.
