When promotions of “Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace” first hit the air, fans everywhere got a glimpse of a brand new villain that was sure to dominate the big-screen. Gone was the helmeted cape-wearing Sith Lord, Darth Vader. In his place, a new beast rose and his name was Darth Maul (Ray Park).
Unfortunately, once viewers saw the finished product, many were disappointed with Maul’s minimal screen time. 17 years after its theatrical release, YouTube’s T7 Production team have brought some much needed redemption for this mysterious villain.
“Darth Maul: Apprentice – A Star Wars Film” lives exactly up to that title. Written, directed and edited by Shawn Bu, the fan video above took roughly two years to complete.
Originally, Ray Park took on the Sith duties in the first of George Lucas’ prequels. This time around, Ben Schamma took over the physicality of the character — who was (spoiler alert?) taken down by Obi-wan Kenobi — while Peter Serafinowicz did the voice work.
“We always felt that Darth Maul should have had more screen time,” says Bu in a statement. “So we wanted to create a film just for him with the best lightsaber fights we could do!”
